While the Megayacht News Radio podcast has been around for more than a decade, there’s always room for more education and information across the yachting podcast landscape (or seascape, should we say). In fact, given the complexities of yachting, owners, their representatives, and even crew tend to have a lot of questions. They’re frequently further related to contracts, maritime arrests, court-ordered auctions, and more. The Yacht Law Podcast strives to answer these questions, through simple-to-understand and engaging conversations. It tackles a significant group of related questions in episode one: what to keep in mind when building a superyacht.
The Yacht Law Podcast comes from maritime attorney Michael Moore of Moore & Co. and journalist Diane M. Byrne of Megayacht News. Moore, as a leading attorney, has extensive experience representing yacht owners, buyers, and the yachting community. As you might expect, building a superyacht is just one aspect of that experience. Byrne, meanwhile, has extensive experience covering yachting and interviewing owners and industry representatives. She, too, often deals with questions about building a superyacht.
As you’ll learn in this podcast episode, a lot can go wrong when you’re signing a contract to build for the first time. Many of the issues come down to errors of omission and/or lack of knowledge.
For example, did you realize that delivery dates are left out of the document more often than not? Also, you’ll learn who should be part of the conversation in finalizing the details of the contract. Additionally, you’ll discover the circumstances under which a broker’s commission is due when you’re building a superyacht. (Here’s a hint: The simple act of bringing a buyer and seller together means they’ve actually earned the money.)
