Time and again, the top leisure expenditures among ultra-high-net-worth individuals are art, private aviation, and yachts. When Sanlorenzo realized its clients regularly enjoyed taking their yachts and megayachts to Art Basel Miami, inspiration struck. The shipyard began creating curated collections to better engage with them as well as potential new customers. Thus began a platform dedicated to art, called Sanlorenzo Arts, which kicked off at Art Basel Miami in 2018. Sanlorenzo Arts returns to Art Basel Miami next month, with a new project by American artist McArthur Binion.
In fact, Binion created a site-specific work for Sanlorenzo Arts inside the Sanlorenzo Lounge at the art fair. Cobalto (above) is part of the artists’ DNA series, a body of work he started eight years ago. It combines the disciplines of collage, drawing, and painting to create autobiographical concepts. For instance, he has used photos of the home where he grew up in Mississippi, as well as pages from address books. Distinctively, Binion uses the scale of his own body for the components of his art. Cobalto, and his other works, employs brilliant, geometric patterns chained by a grid. And, specifically where Cobalto is concerned, he chose Italian ink named, aptly, cobalt, to make a connection between his work and Sanlorenzo’s oceanic world.
To get a better sense of what Sanlorenzo Arts holds in store, take a look back at the platform’s premiere at Art Basel in Switzerland earlier this year. There, the Swiss artist Emil Michael Klein displayed two works. He played with the notions of hiding and revealing with Suspensions, which allowed guests to literally walk through the art.
Ultimately, “The search for new horizons and an openness toward new creative forms of expression has always been part of our vision,” says Massimo Perotti, Sanlorenzo’s CEO.
