For decades, people have headed to Lürssen for custom superyachts. So, what was the shipyard doing with a bunch of paddles and canoes this month? Despite what you might assume, the craft were not watertoys for the latest new builds. Rather, it was time for the annual Lürssen Rowing Regatta. The event primarily brings together crew, but also owners’ representatives as well as designers, of current projects in its sheds. As you’ll see, the competition was fierce, matched by the level of merriment.
The event, celebrating its 14th edition, started in 2003 as a way to provide a little fun, and a break, for the crewmembers who spend weeks and months on site at the German yard. It has become incredibly popular since then, with more than 100 eager rowers dressed dressed in team colors—as well as some crazy costumes this time around, including a chicken. The prize: the treasured Lürssen Challenge Cup.
Considering just how long it took to declare a winner this time, the Cup is surely treasured. The Lürssen Rowing Regatta went all the way to a 14th round. Thrills, as well as spills, led up to it, too. And, although the weather looked a bit chilly, judging by how spectators were dressed, no one seemed to mind getting splashed.
It’s often said that crew make or break the ownership experience. Activities like the Lürssen Rowing Regatta prove that owners aren’t the only ones who recognize this.
