Sunreef is doubling down on solar energy production aboard its yachts. The Sunreef 43M Eco is the latest model to join its Eco series, which employs solar cells in ways you’ve likely never seen before.
At 140 feet (42.7 meters), the new design is the largest sailing superyacht in the Eco line. The series uses electric engines and battery banks for assistance in maneuvering and running hotel loads, rather than diesel engines and gensets. Additionally, the yachts feature more environmentally friendly décor materials. Compressed paper, for instance, is used as countertops for a production model, the Eco 60. But, likely the most noteworthy difference is the use of solar panels—which Sunreef itself created and has a pantent pending. They’re less than 1 mm thick yet strong and flexible, further capable of shaping to hulls and superstructure. The shipyard already has an Eco series yacht in build, the Sunreef 80 Eco, which just saw hull number one launch last month. She has solar cells all along her hull.
The Sunreef 43M Eco will have solar cells in her hull and superstructure, too, plus her mast and boom. Yet another “clean” power will be aboard as well. Specifically, the shipyard is designing a hydro-generation system, fed by the yacht while she’s under sail. A power-management system will monitor and balance energy needs throughout the yacht. As for her electric engines, a pair of 200-kW units will take care of motoring up to 14 knots.
Since the yacht will be semi-custom, clients can choose tailor-made furnishings and, as mentioned above, more environmentally responsible materials. Sunreef already has ethically sourced woods, natural fabrics, and other options at the ready. Given the multi-hull configuration, the ample 50-foot (15.4-meter) beam affords plenty of room for multiple combinations.
You can outfit areas like the Ocean Lounge, a.k.a. the beach club, with these. The lounge can include a bar, a gym, and/or a massage area. Regardless, Sunreef will equip the area with fold-down platforms on three sides, ensuring all three connect to make the outside area fully walk-around. Plus, a separate dedicated tender garage means the area won’t do double duty.
Neither will the flying bridge. The Sunreef 43M Eco will dedicate it solely to relaxation, with a dining area, sunning spots, and of course soaking in a hot tub. The shipyard further suggests adding a movie screen for enjoyment under the stars.
