Although you could easily believe this is an age-old cruiser, the yacht Far Niente is a new build. The 107-footer (33-meter) pays homage to vessels from another century with thoroughly modern engineering and technology within her hull.
The looks mimic those of Dutch herring ships from the early 20th century, according to Hoek Design. This studio—Dutch, naturally—is responsible for the exterior styling, naval architecture, and interior design. Notably, the design studio drew inspiration from these vessels’ engineering, too. They plied the challenging North Sea, and therefore needed strong seakeeping so that crews could continue working. Despite the yacht Far Niente not planning on doing commercial fishing, she potentially could encounter some tough conditions. SES Yachts, her Istanbul-based builder, refers to her as a classic expedition motoryacht. Best range should be 3,750 nautical miles, which suits transatlantic trips. Additionally more like a globetrotting ship, she has a single MAN engine and propeller. “By optimizing hull and propeller design, we have been able to maximize fuel efficiency,” explains Ruurt Muelemans, Hoek Design’s managing partner.
Andre Hoek, the studio’s founder, further says that she’s a combination of “a classic motoryacht design with a fully optimized, high-tech underwater body shape.” In fact, he continues, “We have been evolving this design philosophy over many years and notably applied it to the multiple award-winning 56-meter motoryacht Blue IIC.” In that particular case, the owner wanted to cross the Northwest Passage and visit polar regions.
Regardless of where the owners of the yacht Far Niente cruise, they have Sleipner stabilizers to enhance comfort more. A big battery bank complements twin gensets as well, to reduce fuel usage.
For creature comforts, the owners have a private stateroom forward on the main deck, overlooking the bow. Guests, meanwhile, have four staterooms below decks. Since the galley is below decks, near the crew cabins, the majority of the main deck is for relaxing and dining. The entire owners’ party can further get together in the sky lounge, which connects to a shaded alfresco area for dining and enjoying the views. Although no images are available, the décor blends contemporary and classic looks. Specifically, grey-washed oak and white paneling pairs with time-honored deck heads and timber beams.
Also contemporary: a retractable crane for launching and retrieving two tenders forward.
