The 315-foot (96-meter) Vava II grabs headlines for being among the world’s largest megayachts, but now there’s a better reason. Her crew has created the Vava II Global Challenge, in which they’ll participate in athletic feats while on their circumnavigation, all to raise money for YachtAid Global (YAG).
The idea behind Vava II Global Challenge started with Capt. Brendan O’Shannassy last summer. The crew intends to raise awareness of a variety of humanitarian and environmental causes. The crew and YAG are continuing to work out which communities along the extensive itinerary can most benefit, and how. Regardless, Vava II has already dropped off aid in one country. While in the Maldives in December, Vava II’s crew presented computer equipment to the Autism Association of the Maldives. OmniAccess, a marine VSAT and yacht internet service provider, made the purchase and delivery of the equipment to Vava II possible.
We’ll have more on Vava II’s efforts throughout their circumnavigation, including details on how you can donate if you so wish during specific challenges.
Speaking of challenges, one that YAG has faced for several years is the lack of storage space to hold items in anticipation of loading them onto megayachts that have pledged to deliver the aid. YAG now has temporary storage space in Fort Lauderdale at RoboVault. It’s planning to put it to good use straight away: This Wednesday YAG is hosting a “Stock the Storage Unit!” event. From 6pm to 8pm, anyone who wishes to drop off school supplies, medicines, clothing, and more is welcome.
