Here’s a handy solution to the problem of not having time to fly overseas: Owners with megayachts under construction at Italy-based Columbus Yachts now have access to a still-camera feed chronicling the build of their project.
The photos here are of one such project, the 40m Sport Hybrid being delivered later this year. It was taken by one of the fisheye-lens (an ultra-wide-angle lens) cameras that Columbus Yachts recently installed. Professional photographers and photo buffs alike have been using fisheye lenses for years, to create circular, 180-degree images. The wider depth of field makes for intriguing shots.
Clearly that’s one of the reasons why Columbus Yachts decided to install the lens-equipped cameras in each of its build sheds. The creative angles notwithstanding, a fisheye lens is one of the best ways to capture a full megayacht project in one frame, without the image being so far away as to be too small to decipher details. Indeed, if you compare the two photos here, you’ll see items in different places, and the presence and then absence of craftspeople.
Owners and their management team can log on anytime to see the latest goings-on with their megayachts. In addition, Columbus Yachts is retaining copies of all images, from the yacht’s start to finish, to create a video for owners at the project’s completion. Naturally, Columbus Yachts will also keep a copy for its own records.
