It’s nearly impossible to find commentary from superyacht shipyards and designers these days that omits the subject of sustainability. Some of these companies, for instance, reveal that clients increasingly are more environmentally minded. Next month, the Superyacht Sustainable Design Webinar will address some of the biggest issues facing the industry, with our editor, Diane M. Byrne, serving as the moderator.
The Superyacht Sustainable Design Webinar is from Quaynote Communications, a company offering educational events for consumers and professionals in yachting. The webinars over the past year have averaged more than 100 individuals tuning in from around the world, in fact. This particular webinar, set for January 19 at 10 a.m. Eastern time, is especially for owners’ representatives, yacht managers, captains, family-office managers, and others on the ownership side. Similarly, it’s strongly suited to builders, brokers, and of course designers.
“I’m looking forward to guiding this important conversation and not only educating a number of professionals, but learning a few things myself,” Byrne says. “Sustainable design isn’t just picking out a few ‘eco’ materials. It’s about taking a proactive role, versus sitting back and waiting for clients to ask about options. It’s about anticipating challenges and finding solutions, for new builds and especially refits.”
Given this, at least one design studio will be on the panel. Alex (Alexandra) Parkinson, the full-time sustainability specialist for Winch Design’s interiors department, is among the speakers. Notably, Alastair Callender, who designed the super-green Soliloquy more than a decade ago, is a panelist, too. Currently, Callender is a broker with Moravia Yachting.
Finally, Robert von Tol, the founder of the Water Revolution Foundation, is participating in the Superyacht Sustainable Design Webinar. Among other initiatives, the non-profit foundation offers sustainability training for superyacht companies and professionals.
Among the topics the panel will discuss:
- the role designers play in influencing and establishing sustainability
- whether future owners will ask for sustainable yachts, and in what ways
- how the industry can work with clients to promote sustainability
- what challenges refits pose to maintaining sustainability goals.
