A nanny cabin with a balcony. Furnishings facing unexpected directions. These are some of the surprises that the megayacht Metis has in store, all to the delight of her owner. Recently delivered by Benetti, this fully custom 207-footer (63-meter) is enjoying her inaugural cruise.
The surprising interior design results from the owner, a longtime yachtsman, giving the designers essentially free reign. Bannenberg & Rowell collaborated with Birgit Otte Interior Atelier. In fact, Dickie Bannenberg, who partners with Simon Rowell at the London-based studio, says, “Metis’ unique layout has freed us from what I call the ‘tyranny of alignment,’ allowing us to unlock new corners and views of asymmetric designs.” One example is the beach club, with three fold-down platforms. Typically, furnishings face aft in beach clubs. However, onboard Metis, the design team twisted the arrangement about 30 degrees off this setup. Suffice it to say that the studio insists the owner and his guests still get to enjoy great views. In fact, since they face a slightly different direction, they may enjoy views they previously did not. And, the same is true in both the saloon and upper-deck saloon.
Metis, launched in December, also has the unexpected in store in the master suite. Encompassing more than 1,722 square feet (160 square meters), the private oasis shows off smoked oak in varying degrees of finishes. Furthermore, carbon fiber, polished steel, and marbles come together here. Finally, Bannenberg & Rowell designed powerful geometric shapes into not just furnishings like the bed frame (rimmed in stainless steel), but even the wood finishes.
Currently cruising in the South of France, the megayacht Metis should encourage her owner not just to relax, but also to stay fit. He requested a special gym, poised on the upper deck.
