As much as yacht owners and crew are seeking more sustainable operations for their primary yachts, it’s just as important to consider the tenders and toys. Williams Jet Tenders is among the tender manufacturers striving to make a difference. For now on, all of its offerings with Yanmar engines have approval for using HVO.
If you’re not familiar with HVO, it stands for Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil. It’s an alternative to diesel and other fossil fuels, made from vegetable oil. In fact, the oil itself is often “waste” cooking oil, making it a renewable material. Overall, HVO reduces greenhouse gas emissions, which are becoming stricter globally. Furthermore, HVO is a “drop-in” fuel. This mans that no modifications need to be made to an internal combustion engine. Neither are modifications necessary for hoses or other components.
Yanmar supplies its outboards to Williams Jet Tenders and has already tested and approved HVO for use. So far, according to the tender company, its DieselJet 415, 445, and 505 (below) models can all use HVO100 fuel. The fuel is suitable for the SOLAS 505 model, too, a rescue tender.
Floris Lettinga, Yanmar’s director of sales and marketing, says that the two companies chose to test and approve the biofuel for two significant reasons. “We are not just propelling innovation; we are supporting our customers in propelling a sustainable journey towards a cleaner future,” he explains. Ultimately, it’s “optimizing cutting-edge technology with environmental consciousness.”
Future tender models and model evolutions with Yanmar will use the biofuel as well. Testing is ongoing at the headquarters in England. (Seventeen dealerships are currently across the United States, including in Florida, Rhode Island, Michigan, and Washington State.) Sarah Moore, Williams Jet Tenders’ sustainability specialist, notes, “We are committed to finding innovative sustainable solutions that reduce the direct emissions impact from our factory and our vehicles.”
