Teledyne FLIR (a.k.a. FLIR), which makes thermal-imaging cameras, has legions of loyal customers across yachting. Recent superyacht fires stemming from watertoys’ lithium-ion batteries have made more owners aware of its products. In fact, the company says it’s seen an increase in sales of the FLIR AX8 thermal monitoring camera, specifically to keep a watchful eye on toy garages.
FLIR created the camera to allow boat owners to mind vital equipment like engines, exhaust manifolds, and shaft bearings. It’s small enough to fit in the engine compartment of a production boat. For superyacht toy garages, its field of vision is wide enough to monitor several toys at once, whether or not they all have batteries. Since the FLIR AX8 can detect temperature variations as little as a tenth of a degree, it sounds an alarm well before anyone can smell smoke. It also sends visual alerts. Those extra minutes could make an important different while out on the water.
