When Sunseeker revealed plans for the 90 Ocean a few years ago, customer reaction convinced the shipyard it was onto something. The nearly 20-foot by 13-foot (6-meter by 4-meter) open-air beach club, it reasoned, would work well on larger models. Not only that, but emphasizing the volume of a particular project versus her LOA would help clients better understand space utilization. The global debut of the Ocean 182 yacht this season in the United States proved Sunseeker right on both accounts.
Since volume (a.k.a. gross tonnage), not length, dictates the sensation of space, the Ocean 182 yacht nomenclature follows accordingly. For perspective, she’s more voluminous than most competitive offerings. In fact, this 89-footer (27-meter) is one of a scant few whose volume exceeds 100 gross tons. Add in a five-stateroom configuration, an open-plan main deck, and a major change for a Sunseeker making a bigger impact on living space, and you have a strong mix.
That major change is situating the sole helm on the upper deck, within the skylounge. Removing it from the main deck lends more floorspace to the galley. It further allows Sunseeker to offer an unexpected layout, namely the galley and dining area being adjacent to each other. They’re fully forward on the main deck, beneath the long, raked windows that typically characterize the helm. Since the galley equipment is primarily out of view, though, dining doesn’t feel like it’s amidst a cooking area. Further nice, a wine chiller faces the dining area, reminding you to select (or show off) your favorite vintage.
Additionally making you more aware of the volume, the Ocean 182 yacht has almost entirely retractable sliding doors. In fact, they tuck away nearly completely out of view to starboard. Not even superyachts with double the volume boast this. Furthermore, the bulkhead fully aft is glass. The combination makes the aft deck and skylounge far more capacious-feeling and more united as a primary lounging or entertaining area. Another smart feature, especially for entertaining, is the wetbar in the skylounge. What’s more, since Sunseeker leaves the alfresco area free of fixed furnishings, it’s yours to coordinate aesthetically with the skylounge as you see fit.
But, of all the features getting buyers’ attention, the open-air beach club ranks highest. It’s the first thing you’ll notice in the Ocean 182 yacht’s profile, after all. It incorporates Sunseeker’s X-Tend convertible seating (below), which can face the water. The center of the swim platform also extends and lifts hydraulically. Additional nice, and practical, touches include a hidden barbecue to starboard, a shower, and speakers (naturally). While competitors have beach clubs, too, they’re primarily smaller, enclosed spaces. The Sunseeker setup makes you want to drop anchor off your favorite beach or Bahamian island, and spend all day out here.
With sophisticated décor selections from Design Unlimited, known for its megayacht work, the Ocean 182 yacht could very well take market share away from builders that have dominated this size range for years. More importantly, the model will make buyers more aware of how volume makes all the difference in the onboard experience.
