Sunpads are a big hit with charter guests… so why not solar superyachts? Or, to be more specific, Solar, the second Arcadia 85 superyacht built with solar panels.
A central agency with Edmiston & Company, Solar was launched in 2010. As her model name suggests, Solar is 85 feet (25.9 meters) LOA. And from €49,000 (about $70,371) per week, up to eight people can feel confident about their carbon footprint, without losing out on luxury.
Like other solar-paneled yachts, Solar’s panels run the hotel load. This means everything from air conditioning to lighting, plus pumps and refrigeration. No humming or vibrating gensets are used. Another eco-friendly fact: Solar sips fuel, burning a miserly 30 liters per hour (7.9 gallons per hour) at 9 knots. Top speed is 18 knots. Even the soaps and other beauty products aboard are organic.
Speaking of organic, the chef only uses those types of ingredients for meals aboard Solar. You can enjoy them on the aft deck, looking in on the saloon (above), which is practically surrounded by glass. Floor-to-ceiling windows lie to each side, plus solar panels line the ceiling. They lighten and brighten the contemporary decor. No need to feel as if you’re in a goldfish bowl, however. Canvas blinds lower at the touch of a button for privacy.
Additional highlights: a full-beam master suite, a VIP stateroom, and two twin staterooms. Watertoys include a PWC, two Seabobs, two towable tubes, and snorkeling gear.
