The hull of the latest Oceanco has arrived for further construction. This 109-meter Oceanco (357’6″) is still confidential, but she marks an important moment for the Dutch builder. She is the first megayacht to enter its newly opened additional facilities.
Situated about six miles (10 kilometers) away from the builder’s headquarters in Alblasserdam, the new yard already existed. It previously housed construction activities for massive offshore oil platforms. It sits alongside the Oude Maas river, in the town of Zwijndrecht. Oceanco acquired it for both new construction and refit work.
The 109-meter Oceanco is one of two super-size superyachts set to put it to use this year. The second yacht has not yet arrived, but Oceanco has said that she’ll be in the 330-foot-plus (100-meter-plus) size range. In the meantime, the new hull will be joined with her superstructure. She’ll also begin receiving major systems and other equipment installations. Once the tasks finish, the 109-meter Oceanco will make her way to Alblasserdam for final fit-out.
Even if another yacht does not take her place in Zwijndrecht at that time, that facility will still see plenty of activity. Oceanco acquired it further to accommodate a “superyacht brain park.” The goal is to create on-site technical training for the new generation of skilled workers. It’s not just for Oceanco’s benefit, but also for the benefit of the subcontractors upon which it relies—and therefore the megayacht industry at large. On a related subject, the subcontractors can all set up offices alongside the yachts in build. This should lead to stronger cooperation among all companies.
