Thanks to a newly effective law, foreign-flagged megayachts can charter in Costa Rica—and stay for up to a year. The 197-foot (60-meter) megayacht Formosa will be among the first charter yachts taking advantage, as early as this month, too.
In mid-March, the Costa Rica Congress voted, unanimously, to legalize foreign-flagged charter activity in its waters. The following month, Costa Rica’s president signed it into law. Fraser Yachts and Origen Escapes, an adventure-travel company with more than 20 years’ experience working with megayachts, played key roles in ushering the legislation into consideration. The law officially became effective November 1.
As for Formosa, while she’s presently in Mexico, she’ll relocate to Costa Rica for weekly or 10-day charters on request this month. Specifically, she’ll base out of Marina Pez Vela. Even if no Costa Rica charter bookings come in for the rest of November, Formosa will still head there for availability from January onwards. Accommodating 12 guests, she has a crew of 15, and a dive instructor onboard. A dedicated masseuse is onboard as well. An elevator makes getting around easier, especially to watch movies in the skylounge, where the audio and video are state of the art. Sweet dreams wait for you in the master suite, on the upper deck and with private alfresco access.
When you go, be sure to visit a few Costa Rica cruising anchorages like the Gulf of Papagayo. It offers some of the Pacific Ocean’s most fascinating marine diversity. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Santa Elena Peninsula, is here, too, renowned for its natural geological characteristics. Just down the coast, meanwhile, Marina Pez Vela is near great parasailing, whale watching, and excellent fishing. Regardless of where you visit, Costa Rica has abundant waterfalls, thrilling ziplining, and 800 miles of Pacific coastline. (While the country further borders the Caribbean, the Pacific side is home to megayacht marinas and better infrastructure.) Furthermore, Origen Escapes is collaborating with Fraser Yachts to create memorable experiences, including rafting down rivers where you’re the only people on the water.
If you’re concerned about COVID-19, the World Health Organization indicates that about 52 percent of the population is fully vaccinated. It also says 72 percent have received at least one dose. Unvaccinated adult visitors need a medical insurance policy to cover any COVID-19 related medical treatment or quarantine lodging. Minors under age 18 and fully vaccinated adults don’t require travel medical insurance. Instead, you can show your vaccination card.
Formosa has a weekly base rate of $470,000 during low season and $515,000 during high season.
