The Algarve coast of southern Portugal rightfully has a reputation as the sunny coast. Its beaches attract holiday-goers in summertime, as do its hidden bays and surfing spots. Soon, superyacht owners will be able to dock their yachts there, too. The new Nova Marina, currently in construction, opens later this year.
The marina is coming from the Vilamoura World Group, which already has a significant-size marina in the area. Several hotels and golf courses there are further in its fold, along with residential real estate projects. Isolete Correa, Vilamoura World Group’s interim CEO, says Nova Marina is a natural improvement of the company’s existing services. Additionally, it “responds to the growing needs within the market in relation to large boats, which currently pass this part of the coast.”
Traditionally, superyachts don’t stay in Portugal. In fact, they bypass it on their journey between the Med and crossing the Atlantic for the Caribbean and the rest of North America. The closest most come to the southern Portuguese coast is a fuel stop in Gibraltar.
The new Nova Marina intends to change some of those habits. Specifically, it will provide 68 berths along three pontoons. Size-wise, yachts starting at 66 feet (20 meters) and up to 131 feet (40 meters) are the exclusive focus. Naturally, the amenities and conveniences that crew expect will be in place, like pump-out service in each slip. Additionally, the construction teams are installing charging points for electric boats. Furthermore, Vilamoura World Group is considering installing photovoltaic power (a.k.a. solar panel generated power) for efficient water and electric supplies.
Ground breaking for the marina began this month. Vilamoura World Group has had a foothold in the resort area for more than five decades. Correa says, “These clients and those that visit and stay in Vilamoura are the real focus of this project, and are the ones we work for on a daily basis, to provide them with an even better and more extraordinary experience.”
