Though it has faded from the headlines, the destructive impact of Hurricane Odile on Cabo San Lucas remains. Electricity is restored in some areas, but not all. And, many people will be homeless for some time. Doug Jackson, the owner of the Nordhavn 76 christened Tortuga (above), knows the area well, berthing his yacht eight months each year at Marina Cabo San Lucas, managed by IGY Marinas. Jackson and Tortuga are therefore embarking on an aid-delivery trip to Cabo San Lucas mid-month.
Jackson and Tortuga were in California when Hurricane Odile hit. He was motivated to collect much-needed items for the short- and long-term recovery. As much as the photos he’s seen of the devastation upset him, they also motivate him. In a statement released by Nordhavn, Jackson says, “It doesn’t help to stay away.”
Jackson began telling friends and family, plus Nordhavn staff, of his plans. “When I put the word out about collecting donations, everyone stepped up—including a restaurant in Newport Beach and another restaurant and shoe company in Vegas,” he explains. Nordhavn helped collect bags and boxes of things like clothes, tools, and water, which Jackson picked up earlier this week.
Jackson is continuing to collect donations through the week of October 13. (If you’d like to donate, send us an email, and we’ll put you in touch with representatives at Nordhavn.) Jackson and Tortuga will cruise non-stop over about three and a half days to reach Cabo San Lucas. They’ll remain in the area for about a week. Among his first priorities: helping 12 families that fellow IGY Marinas’ tenants have come to know. Those families lost their homes in the storm.
Nordhavn and Jackson are convinced he’ll have a big boatload of donations. Several times he has apparently found donations waiting for him in his driveway.
