Málaga is one of Spain’s fastest-growing cities. In fact, it has the largest pandemic population growth. Additionally, its strong tourism and real-estate markets allowed the city to outpace the economic growth of the country and the rest of the Aldalucia region last year. These factors, plus its southern seaside location, make it ripe for marina development. Therefore, IGY Marinas and two partners are developing Málaga San Andres Marina. By 2024, it will feature 600 slips for yachts to 197 feet (60 meters).
One partner is Marina Málaga SAN, an entity of the Qatari investment group Al Alfia. It’s serving as the main investor. Another company will handle project engineering. IGY Marinas will manage and market the marina. Altogether, the companies have a 50-year concession from the city and port authority to develop and maintain the marina. The formal concession was delayed from being effective in 2020 due to the pandemic.
Málaga San Andres Marina will be walking distance to the city’s historic center. The location is also 20 minutes from the regional airport and 10 minutes from the city train station. That station offers high-speed rail connections to Madrid and other regional Andalucia allures. IGY Marinas believes that these, the cultural attractions, and the weather make year-round and short-term berthing attractive options. “The opportunity to bring IGY’s expertise and personnel to operate and market this significant project represents a further opportunity for IGY to continue its investments in the overall development of the nautical sector of the City of Malaga,” says Tom Mukamal, IGY Marinas’ CEO.
The plans for Málaga San Andres Marina include creating shopping, dining, and entertainment venues on land. Overall, 86,111 square feet (8,000 square meters) of landside development will take place. That development will include a sailing school, classrooms, and event spaces, too. The noted architect José Seguí, who has a studio in Málaga, is handling design. He’s received several awards, including one from UNESCO for the careful restoration of the 1860s-era Cervantes Theatre in the city. Of course, the marina will offer concierge services, crew facilities, on-site parking for 400 vehicles, and the other amenities you and your crew expect.
Finally, the development will adhere to sustainability principles governing construction and ongoing operations. For example, the marina will employ solar power generation and bioclimatic building design, among other things.
