Considering that this video has racked up more than 62,000 views in its first three weeks online, a lot of people want o know what it’s really like being yacht crew. Come behind the scenes as chef Brennan Dates shows how much work goes into cooking for guests aboard a superyacht.
If you’ve had the pleasure of enjoying a meal aboard a yacht, likely the crew made service seem effortless. However, hours and even days of preparation led to that point. Dates shows you, for instance, how he and the crew stock the stowage area for eggs, produce, and more—for just one week’s charter.
As much as he’s been a chef for more than 20 years, though, Dates confesses he still has a bit of anxiety the night before guests arrive. Did they buy enough, and buy enough of the right things? Will the guests enjoy what he prepares? “There’s always those butterfly moments, which is cool,” he concludes.
There are fun moments, too, of course. Note his smile when he pulls a super-large crab from amid just-delivered provisions dockside, for example. (And yes, the crab is still alive. Fresh is best.) Additionally, he and his fellow crewmembers share a few good laughs over frozen packages of bacon and English muffins. Furthermore, the sight of a birthday cake and preparing a deckle-stuffed rib eye surely will make your mouth water.
With nearly 100 countries under his belt and more on his bucket list, he has quite the repertoire upon which to rely. Even so, cooking for guests aboard a superyacht is challenging, as you’ll learn toward the end. Not to worry, since Dates relishes it (pun intended). “I have the privilege of catering to the rich and famous, creating gourmet cuisine for guests who demand nothing but the best,” he notes.
