For the past six years, Capt. Jason Halvorsen has been at the helm of Marcato. This rugged 141-foot (43-meter) explorer megayacht has visited lots of interesting and picturesque places on earth. Among the fascinating places he has seen, Patagonia is certainly a memorable trip. Despite that, though, a trip to the Bahamas several years ago was, as he puts it, “mind-blowing.”
Halvorsen and the crew of Marcato are part of the International SeaKeepers Society’s Discovery Yachts program, which assists scientists and researchers. As he explains in this “get to know” video, that Bahamian trip was a way to support SeaKeepers’ conservation and awareness initiatives. Specifically, it was a shark-tagging mission. Not only that, but it was his first experience working alongside scientists and especially getting up close to these seemingly scary denizens of the deep. “It’s something I’ll never forget,” Halvorsen says.

The biggest takeaway for Halvorsen: “At the end of it, I didn’t feel like we had just hosted a scientific expedition. We truly felt like we were involved in a scientific expedition.”
You, too, can participate in a scientist-led trip, or even organize your own citizen-scientist trip. The International SeaKeepers Society has full information, and contact details, on its website. Furthermore, you can follow the adventures of Marcato on Instagram.
