Since 2004, the three-person team behind Hot Lab Yacht & Design has been making inroads into the yachting and superyacht sectors. In fact, within its first year in business, Hot Lab won a prestigious MYDA (Millennium Yacht Design Award). The international competition for yacht designers encourages both established professionals and young designers who have never had a project come to fruition to enter. The MYDA ceremony is held during Seatec, an international technology and design show that attracts the world’s leading boat, yacht, and ship design and engineering firms.
Just two years later, Hot Lab won yet another MYDA, this time for the 47-Meter Explorer seen here. Hot Lab designed both the exterior and the interior of the 154-foot megayacht project. The 47-Meter Explorer is intended for 12 people in the owner’s party and a nearly 1-to-1 crew-to-guest ratio. Antonio Romano, one of Hot Lab’s partners, explains here, the 47-Meter Explorer is rugged but also has softer side. Check out the image gallery, including the terrific owner’s suite, a 754-square-foot (70-square-meter) affair on the upper deck.
“Inspired by tough tuna-fishing vessels, which have exceptional seakeeping qualities, this 47-meter has ample interior volume given by its 10-meter beam, with a hull of steel and superstructure of light alloy. It was commissioned by GYS Super Yacht from Genoa.
“We created a concept which melds classic and modern, where the former embraces aesthetics and the latter embraces design principles, such as the bulbous bow. Classic and modern match together, leading to safer and more comfortable sailing.
“The vessel offers its 12 passengers almost everything they need to spend their sailing in complete relaxation, without any worries: large saloons, three bars, a Jacuzzi tub, and a complete health and fitness area with breathtaking view over the sea.
“The beamy hull allows the vessel to host meetings either in harbor or sailing, for an amazing experience. The owner has the entire 70-square-meter top deck, which includes a wide terrace, all to himself. Some curious solutions are adopted for the interiors, clean and rational yet luxurious, so typical of Italian good taste. Some of the most important furniture makers and design professionals are engaged to give a high quality for the finish, while the marine and lighting section of 3M offers some innovative solutions as far as the lighting system is concerned, such as the use of fiber optics to illuminate the interiors of the yacht.
“The vessel is equipped with several leisure craft: a seven-meter tender, two PWCs, and two inflatables, respectively four and five meters. It also has a stern pool that converts to a helipad.
“The project won a MYDA award in 2007 in the professionals category. The judges said it showed ‘stylistic solutions taking inspiration from exploration vessels, along with some sophisticated choices in the arrangement of the spaces and furnishings across the ship.’ They further added, ‘The aluminum superstructure stands out for its large glazed surfaces. The stern, with large, open spaces, offers a direct contact with the environment. …Unusual solutions have been selected for the clean, rational furnishings, the fruit of a cooperation with some leading Italian furniture and design companies. The lighting solutions, designed with the help of 3M, are unique and innovative.’”
