Some of the world’s leading photographers, videographers, filmmakers, and writers share a common concern for the oceans. They are at the heart of SeaLegacy, an ocean-expedition and visual-storytelling collective. In fact, SeaLegacy combines decades of experience in conservation, photography, and communications with digital and social technologies, to ensure a healthy future for the oceans. Oceanographic magazine and SeaLegacy, with additional support from Princess Yachts, are launching the Ocean Photography Awards for amateurs and professionals alike.
Kicking off in March, the Ocean Photography Awards is the first competition to highlight marine photography from such a wide spectrum of people. The competition will celebrate images from around the world that accurately and, of course, handsomely capture the extraordinary beauty and quandaries of the ocean. Accordingly, the awards will center on the themes of conservation, exploration, and adventure.
Specifically, amateur and professional photographers will be able to enter six different categories related to these themes. The announcement of the categories comes in March. Regardless, seven photographers from the SeaLegacy Collective will serve as the judges. They include Shawn Heinrichs, an Emmy Award-winning cinematographer. They further include Paul Nicklen, a fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers.
The Ocean Photography Awards ceremony will take place in August, in London. The winner in each category receives a variety of photography- and expedition-oriented prizes.
Princess Yachts decided to get involved due to supporting several conservation initiatives. “We are proud to be playing our part in supporting this truly global, and unified, celebration,” says Kiran Haslam, Princess’ chief marketing officer. “We look forward to helping shine a light on the work of those behind the lens who are dedicated to capturing the very best of ocean life.”
