Despite power projects dominating yachting, sailing enthusiasts still find kindred spirits among builders and designers. The superyacht sector is no different. Although only a small number splash year after year, they command attention with their technical prowess and even racing capabilities. Next month, from September 28 to October 1, four new deliveries will showcase their design and construction features during the Monaco Yacht Show. Why are each of these sailing superyachts worth a visit? Read on.
My Song
Nautor’s Swan created the ClubSwan 80 class of one-design race boats for both speed and style. In fact, the series is for enthusiasts who want a little more luxurious cruising time off the racecourse. My Song is hull number one. As a racer, she’s a fast maxi for competitions in the Mediterranean. For leisurely cruising, meanwhile, she has mahogany paneling (thin, for weight savings) and a variety of furnishings installing simply. Those same furnishings, like the bed in the master suite seen at top, remove for racing.
Perseverance
If the footage of Perseverance sailing in Finland (above) gets you going, then wait ‘til you see this modern classic’s interior, also in the video. Perseverance is a Baltic 117 commissioned as a “smart yacht.” Therefore, she has systems that automatically reduce power consumption in unoccupied staterooms. Other more eco-minded equipment includes her propulsion system, with a lithium-ion battery bank allowing her to run silently for long periods.
Sørvind
Hull number five in the SW105 series from Southern Wind Shipyard, Sørvind (below) has spent the summer, her first, in the Med. She did so after departing the South African shipyard on her own bottom. This is traditionally the case with the builder’s deliveries. In her owner’s words, she’s “a high-performance bluewater yacht for fast and comfortable sailing that embodies a Nordic Cool spirit.”
Sunreef 80 Eco
Among the sailing superyachts worth a visit at the show, this catamaran, which had a snowy launch, especially stands out. Sunreef Yachts incorporated flexible solar panels, which its own in-house team created, along her hull sides, superstructure, mast, and hardtop. According to the shipyard, the photovoltaic system can handle what diesel gensets do in terms of hotel load aboard similar-size yachts.
