Mark your calendar for June 29 through July 2 if you’re an avid sailor. The Superyacht Cup Palma 2022 edition has already attracted regular racers, as well as some newcomers. Crews and owners are eager to enjoy the traditionally excellent conditions, vie for bragging rights, and of course share camaraderie in Mallorca’s capital.
One of the returning racers is the sailing superyacht Ganesha, which finished second last year in her class. Her captain and crew are striving to improve this year. “Superyacht Cup Palma is always a geat event,” says Capt. Alex Pamment. “We can’t wait for the end of June to come around!”
Ganesha is among an expected dozen or so competitors, in fact, according to Superyacht Cup Palma 2022 organizers. Already confirmed, for instance, are three J Class yachts, each of which raced previously. Specifically, they are Ranger, Topaz, and Velsheda. They compete on their own course, too, on June 29. Additionally, expect to see Kiboko Tres, whose owner raced in 2015 and 2016 aboard her predecessor, Kiboko Dos. Then there’s Huckleberry, who received the North Sails Boat of the Day award back in 2019.
Due to the differences among the sailing superyachts, the Superyacht Cup Palma 2022 will offer three categories of racing once again. These categories are the Performance Class, for (naturally) high-performance yachts; the non-spinnaker Corinthian Class; and the Superyacht Class. The Real Club Nautico de Palma is providing race-management input, as well as serving as the host venue.
Also hosting some of the activities: the St. Regis Mardavall Mallorca Resort. Owners will head there for an exclusive dinner. Details on the date, as well as the captains’ welcome cocktail, are on the website.
“There is a great energy, emerging around this year’s event, and optimism,” Kate Branagh, the race’s event director, states. “The level of interest has been inspiring.”
On a related note, race organizers say the recent announcement that Barcelona will host the America’s Cup in 2024 is raising Palma’s, and the regatta’s, profile.
