You’ve likely seen more than a few headlines and stories from traditional news media chronicling gossipy details about superyacht owners’ lives. These give the impression that people who buy these yachts are hoarding their wealth, and have no empathy for the rest of society. Equally, the impression is that superyacht owners essentially live like Thurston Howell II from Gilligan’s Island did (before the shipwreck). The Superyacht Life Foundation is on a mission to ensure the general public understands that there’s more to the story than these stereotypes.
In fact, the non-profit is striving to change the conversation around superyachting. In this episode of the Megayacht News Radio podcast, our editor speaks with the foundation’s marketing manager, Dilan Sarac, and editor-in-chief, Charlotte Thomas, to find out how. They share:
- some of the common misconceptions about superyachting, and where they come from (hint: Bond villains are among the sources)
- how giving back to local global communities and supporting scientific research is actually a priority for many owners
- how crews equally engage in giving back
- why the upcoming The Honours awards will further make a difference in changing the conversation around superyachting
- and more.
