While several designers and shipyards have turned their attention to yachting newcomers, Nick Boksa of Boksa Marine Design has been thinking about them for a while. Nearly a decade ago, in fact, he realized the importance of getting their attention. The Marquesas yacht concept taps into those discoveries, plus a lot more. The design, fully capable of construction, makes it easier to enter the market while affording amenities of larger yachts.
In fact, those larger yachts were on Boksa’s mind, too. As super-size superyachts began gaining favor, “There was a hole for these medium-size yachts,” he determined. Fewer builders and studios, he points out, focused on them. Therefore, the Marquesas yacht concept is a comfortable 125 feet (38 meters) LOA, capable of doing what those bigger boats do. Meaning, she can cross oceans, carry abundant water toys for active lifestyles, and of course offer plenty of customization. “The thought was to design a boat that is within reach of the ‘newly’ rich who may not need to build a 60-meter,” Boksa explains.
The full-displacement trideck draws upon Boksa Marine Design’s experience with workboats and long-range yachts, too. Robust engineering to encourage long-range cruising was a crucial starting point. Top speed with traditional 1,200-hp diesels should be 11 to 12 knots. Notably, if clients want a bit more speed, a semi-displacement hull and more horsepower are also possible. Further possible is diesel-electric propulsion.
Regardless, the Marquesas yacht concept shows newcomers the possibilities, including for the on-water lifestyle. So, for instance, with style input from Yacht Design Works, Marquesas offers a big beach club. Equally healthy volume throughout the decks allows entertaining friends and spending quality time with family. Large windows in the saloon let the owners and guests enjoy views of destinations they’re exploring for the first time. From an upper-deck lounge with a bar to the staterooms below, the suggested décor is understated, too, to better appreciate the environment. Natural materials blend with subdued, earth-oriented tones. Interestingly, Boksa Marine Design and Yacht Design Works have a handful of different interior ideas at the ready, to jumpstart conversations. The differing designs reflect traditional design, coastal flair, and modern moods.
Boksa Marine Design has already determined the Marquesas yacht concept can see construction at well-regarded North American, European, and Asian shipyards starting at $18.5 million. The naval architecture and engineering team can adapt the profile and/or general arrangement on the same hull form as well. Ultimately, “Marquesas is a new owner’s rite of passage,” Boksa says.
