Unless you’ve been following yachting awhile, you may not know that Heesen Yachts has its roots in sportfishing yachts. In fact, in 1978, Heesen’s founder, Frans Heesen, took over a boatbuilding operation in Oss, The Netherlands to build aluminum fishing yachts under the Striker Boats name. Other fishing yachts followed decades later, two of which inspired the style and performance of the yacht Ultra G.
Specifically, the two projects were Obsession and Red Sapphire. Obsession is a 126-footer (38.34-meter) which launched in 1996, while Red Sapphire is a 163-footer (49.71-meter) from 2007. Both came from owners who wanted luxury touches, but first and foremost they wanted to fish. Similarly, the original owner of the yacht Ultra G wanted to ply deep waters. (The yacht changed hands prior to delivery, beginning construction as Project Skyfall.) He, however, wanted much more space, in a 194-foot (59-meter) length.
That length required much more power, too. With quadruple MTU engines coupled to waterjets, the yacht Ultra G has an astounding 22,000 horsepower propelling her. A reported top end of 37 knots thanks to the engines and lightweight design mean she’ll reach fishing grounds swiftly. Though Heesen hasn’t disclosed numbers, she is meant to back down on big fish with ease as well.
Just as swiftly, though, she can switch modes from fishing to pure fun. It’s because of amenities like a DJ station and an entire wall of chilled wines. Yet another prime example is the media room fully forward on the main deck. As much as it’s an impressive private theater, it also has a games table. And, speaking of private, the owner has a private retreat aft on the bridge deck, complete with sliding glass doors leading from the stateroom to an alfresco lounge with a hot tub.
Hardcore anglers may be accustomed to boats arranged more around fishboxes and baitwells than post-fishing leisure. But, even they may agree upon seeing Ultra G that putting the “yacht” in “yachtfisherman” is a pretty nice way to go.
