“She is joyful and uplifting, vibrant and carefree,” says Mark Tucker, Design Unlimited’s creative director, of the newly delivered yacht King Benji. It’s all due to what he calls “the owner’s spirit and passion for adventure.” Better yet, true to the nature of custom megayachts, she has a “unique story, which unfolds as you step aboard.”
The bold blue hull of the 153-footer (46.7-meter) certainly is your first hint at the overall vibe. The owner wanted a welcoming, relaxing place for good times with good friends and family. Essentially, she needed to be an escape from busy city lives and a way to pursue adventures. Flexible areas to host parties one week and smaller groups the next were important. So, too, was cooking a priority, and particularly engaging with the chef during meal preparations regardless of the time of day. Therefore, the galley isn’t a crew-only space, and both a breakfast bar and an alfresco teppanyaki bar are onboard.
The decor, however, is what will captivate all who step aboard. Design Unlimited collaborated closely with the owner in selecting reclaimed and textured woods for the various decks. Bamboo, organic woven fibers, and other natural materials simultaneously create tactile experiences. Further noteworthy, each is supposed to “age” as the years go by, not get ripped out and replaced with something shiny and new.
Additionally, each deck aboard the yacht King Benji takes visitors on a journey. The tones and textures echo those of tropical and other water’s-edge lands. Botanical prints command attention in the upper-deck master suite, for instance, to bring to mind the jungle’s biodiversity. Yet another guest stateroom below decks has a massive octopus on the wall. All the guest staterooms, in fact, have ocean themes, each distinctly different from the next. Just as vistas change as you rise from the water’s surface into tropical landscapes, the skylounge lends the sense of being amid a rainforest.
