“Success is not about your bank account. Success is what you create to make peace for yourself.” Anthony Hsieh, a serial American entrepreneur behind companies such as LoanDepot, is sitting aboard his Bad Company Support yacht, reflecting on what matters. And what matters to him most right now is pursuing a longtime dream. It includes traveling the world’s oceans searching for and tagging giant blue and black marlin, to support scientific study.
In this video, Hsieh gives you a behind-the-scenes look at how he’s going to do that. While he’s owned a Damen Yachting support vessel for a while, he acquired her from her first owner. Currently, he’s building the new Bad Company Support yacht at a Damen Yachting shipyard in Turkey. She’s the first Damen Yachting Yacht Support 53, which launched in May 2023. Fittingly for her “Support” designation, she’ll back a fleet of fishing boats traveling together to achieve his goal. That goal started in June 2022 and is still going strong.
The video includes Hsieh walking you through his soon-to-be-delivered yacht. Although she’ll carry a Blackfin 32 and a 43 Release Boatworks Gameboat, the new Damen has creature comforts he’s looking forward to putting to good use. They include, for instance, an upper-deck hot tub, in proximity to dining and seating areas. He also reveals a glimpse at the five staterooms
“I have the luxury of innovation,” Hsieh says about the new Bad Company Support yacht. Since she’s not a conversion, he explains, she draws upon Damen’s technological know-how. Specifically, she’ll not just be capable of carrying his fishing boats, but do so in varying conditions. Additionally, she’ll be fast—something converted commercial vessels are not—for repositioning. Lastly, she’ll have a heli hanger, so that he and his team can scout locations where bait and fish are prevalent.
Hsieh admittedly will spend more time aboard one of his sportfishermen than he will aboard his support yacht. But, he keeps a rigorous schedule for good reason. “Every day, every minute, we want to make sure we have a hook in the water,” he explains. He further notes that we know more about space than we do the ocean. “If we don’t really understand the ocean, it could be a point of no return,” he says.
