Bering Yachts has from day one focused on rugged-looking, oceangoing yachts. So, when it revealed its plans for the B165 yacht, many people were surprised. She’s a much more traditional-looking, popular-port cruiser. In fact, she looks more likely to book a yacht-transport ship and therefore to avoid ocean crossings herself. Alexei Mikhailov, Bering Yachts’ founder, takes on the misassumptions while simultaneously explaining how she’s what he considers “a Mediterranean explorer.”
Blending brawn with beauty, the B165 certainly cuts a pretty profile. She has a long, open aft deck with fold-down bulwarks to offer more leisure space, for example. She further has a glass-fronted pool within the deck, practically at the yacht’s edge. Notably, the pool can be the stowage spot for two tenders when it’s not in use. From bow to stern and from crow’s nest to waterline, the B165 yacht appears every inch a sun-chasing superyacht.
This is certainly what the Bering Yachts team had in mind when it created her. However, Mikhailov and the designers stayed true to their roots. Firstly, the yacht should be able to cover 4,000 nautical miles at 10 knots. That’s not only transatlantic capability, but also transpacific. Secondly, the same system redundancy, vibration attenuation, and other technical measures of the smaller Bering explorers apply to this project.
Still on the subject of the technical measures, Bering Yachts has designed the B165 for either traditional diesel or hybrid propulsion. Currently, the proposal is for twin Caterpillar engines. These should permit a top speed of 15 knots and a cruising speed of 12 knots, both at half load. Should clients want to crisscross the globe and reduce fossil-fuel usage, they can add a large battery bank. Already, the engine-room configuration has enough space for this, and related equipment.
This deck-by-deck tour, though, intends to prove how Bering can build a typical Bering that happens to have a softer side. More than 29 feet (9 meters) of beam, for instance, lends itself well to creating capacious lounges and guest staterooms. A total of 12 people can stay onboard, along with nine crew and the captain. Completely unexpected, two VIPs occupy the main deck, as does a full-beam lounge/movie theater fully forward.
With areas like the 1,076-square-foot (100-square-meter) owners’ deck—most of the upper deck—the B165 yacht attracted a lot of attention at her reveal earlier this year. More than 33,000 people watched this video as well in its first week on YouTube. The yacht is still available for contract and thorough personalization.
