If you ever wondered what it takes to build a superyacht, this video is one of the best learning opportunities. Aptly, “Kismet, Behind the Build” (the title that Lürssen gave the video) is much like a mini documentary. In just under four minutes, the project goes from early steel cutting for the keel to fully finished floating palace, with a movie theater and grand atrium.
Just delivered this month, the 400-footer (122-meter) marks a threepeat for the owner and Lürssen. Although the shipyard hasn’t disclosed the owner’s identity, he’s Shad Khan. He’s a Pakistan-born American entrepreneur who, among other things, owns the Jacksonville Jaguars NFL team. He’s further talked publicly about his previous yachts, including a 312-footer (95-meter) predecessor from 2014.
As the video progresses, bare metal sections of Kismet come together in the shipyard. Therefore, her stylish shapes become more apparent. Her sleek exterior looks are from Nuvolari Lenard, working for the first time with Khan. Long, elegant lines bend and bow gracefully, tricking your eyes into looking more fore to aft than up and down. Even when your gaze does go vertically, though, never does the megayacht look top heavy or overwhelming. It’s majesty over mass.
“Kismet, Behind the Build” gives just a few looks at the entertainment and lounging areas that guests will enjoy. Although they’re brief, they are spectacular. For example, a blink-and-you-miss-it moment is the Nemo cinema. This is a movie theater on the lower deck. Specifically, it has a 150-inch screen and of course plenty of seating. Yet another stand-out space is the spa, rivaling anything you can find on land. It has a hammam, a sauna, and a cryotherapy chamber. From top deck to lower deck, Khan collaborated with Reymond Langton Design, a studio which designed the previous Kismet, too.
“Kismet, Behind the Build” peels back the curtain in a way that few owners allow builders to do. Here’s hoping it convinces more than a few to change their minds. It’s an educational opportunity for more than just casual observers. It’s the spark of inspiration for the welders, electricians, woodworkers, designers, and yes, owners, of tomorrow.
