Between upcoming cruising plans and record-breaking cold temperatures, summer likely can’t come soon enough for some of you. Even if the weather were more cooperative, you still wouldn’t want to wait too long to take delivery. Either way, you’re in luck when it comes to some pretty impressive brokerage buys. Here, we’ve listed some of the largest megayachts for sale, each of which is also among the most famous megayachts in the world. Whether you’re a power player or a sailing devotee, you should find something that pleases.
- Athena. Unquestionably one of the world’s most famous sailing superyachts, Athena (above) is also the only sailing vessel among the five largest megayachts for sale. She comes in at 295 feet (90 meters) if you include her bowsprit. Her hull length is a still-impressive 260 feet (79.25 meters). Another impressive statistic: She’s the largest all-aluminum sailing superyacht on the water. That is, until Royal Huisman, her builder, launches what will become the world’s largest aluminum sailing superyacht in 2020. So, you have two years to take this traditional, even romantic-looking cruiser around the world. Athena accommodates a party of 10. As beautiful as her classic interior is, waste no time enjoying her aft sunpad: being outside is what it’s all about. Asking price: $45 million (about €37.5 million at press time).
- Chakra. If this name doesn’t ring a bell, maybe her former name will: Salem. Salem was a weather ship from the 1960s converted into a pleasure vessel in 1998 by UK-based Devonport Yachts. LOA: 239 feet (73 meters). Yet another big refit in Greece in 2016 changed Salem to Chakra, adding nearly 43 feet (13 meters) to her length. However, that extra length seems purely in the added bowsprit and swim platform, since analysis of old vs. new photos reflect no discernable profile difference elsewhere. Appendages like these warrant attention, but really don’t count in true LOA. Regardless, the refit also saw an on-deck yoga area come aboard. Inside, fitting for a yacht of her name, Chakra has a massage room. While some brokerage firms advertise her with “call for price,” at least one indicates her owner is asking €34.99 million ($42.25 million at press time).
- O’Mega. One of the first charter yachts meant for mega-size cruising parties, O’Mega takes 32 guests. She’s further among the priciest of the largest megayachts for sale, at €57 million (about $68.8 million). What do you get? A 271-footer (82.6-meter) with more than ample areas for entertaining, corporate meetings, or both. If you like hosting parties, take note of her cinema and piano bar, for example. For private times away from everyone, O’Mega offers you a library in the upper-deck master suite. Acres of mahogany line these rooms, along with the main saloon, formal dining area, and guest staterooms. Of course, given her years of service in charter, O’Mega has abundant room for toys and tenders, too.
- Grand Ocean. Another among the largest megayachts for sale whose name may not be familiar. If you’ve followed yachts a while, though, you may recognize her profile. Grand Ocean is the ex-Golden Odyssey II. Delivered 28 years ago by Blohm+Voss, this megayacht measures 263 feet (80.2 meters), a length essentially unheard of at the time. A refit in 2017 pays homage to the original interior design, by the late Alberto Pinto, while adding some conveniences. A dressing area in the master suite is one. While her brokerage listings indicate “call for price,” her weekly base charter rate hints at her exclusivity: €500,000 (about $603,840).
- Legend. With a whiskey and cigar lounge at your disposal, you can’t go wrong aboard Legend. You also can’t go wrong if adventurous cruising in icy waters is on your bucket list. Not only does Legend have a fire pit, she still bears her original ice-breaking hull. (She started life as as an ice-breaking tug in 1974.) This gives this 254-footer (77.4-meter) an advantage among the largest megayachts for sale. So, too, does a refit in 2015 and an owner renowned for taking meticulous care of his craft. Asking price: €46.5 million (about $56.157 million).
